WANT LOCAL CHEESE?

Naked Cow Dairy goes IndieGoGo for Cheese!

Naked Cow Dairy is a women-owned, family run cow dairy on the island of Oahu whose mission is to keep the art of caring for dairy cows alive and well in Hawaii and to bring Island-made signature local fresh-churned butter and artisan cheeses to the table. Hand-crafted dairy products ensure the health and happiness of the cows as well as the high high quality of the product. This campaign’s goal is to raise $15,000 to equip the kitchen with a heating element for their 230 gallon cheese vat & low-temp pasteurizer. This part costs about $7000 to purchase and install. In addition they need to build and outfit a cheese aging room that will keep the delicious cheeses at the right temperature and humidity until they go to market. The equipment and buildout of the space we need is estimated to cost about $8000. With these parts of the puzzle in place they will be on the way to making Hawaii cheesy!!  click here to learn more

Legislative Updates

This week we found our selves down at the Capitol to give testimony for a few bills that interest us.

NEEDS ACTION: HB1947/Food Safety Bill will be heard again February 8th, 8AM. We are opposed to this bill, and feel it is overreaching and will eliminate the ability of small farmers to be able to continue growing food for us. If you agree, please click here to submit your testimony, by pushing the OPPOSE button.

GMO LABELING: For updates please join GMO-Free Oahu Facebook page. There is much hesitation from the committee chairs to allow these bills to be heard. What happens is they just keep referring them from committee to committee, never getting a hearing until time runs out. A call or email demanding so would be of great benefit. Do you think you have a right to know what you are eating?

  • SB 2443 and HB 2034are comprehensive measures which would require labeling of all foods and/or raw agricultural products which contain or were produced with GMOs.
  • SB 2891  is similar to SB 2443
  • SB 2448 and HB 2031would require labeling of all food products containing GMOs, but not those produced with such (like meat), similar to the CA labeling initiative.
  • SB 2279 and HB 2746would require labeling of GE whole foods.
  • SB 2190 and HB 2101would require labeling of GE fish.
 GOOD NEWS:
HB2430 Creating an agricultural development and food security program within the Department of Agriculture passed with amendments.
HB2431 Amends objectives and policies for the economy to support the purchase and consumption of locally grown products. Passed with amendments.
HB2421 Awards a grant to the Oceanic Institute for the construction of the feeds research and pilot production facility. Passed with amendments. (Remember when Haleiwa Farmers Market and Hawaii Farmers Union brought in Jerry Cunningham from Coyote Creek Farm a couple years ago to share his knowledge of feed mills and chicken production? Those conversations helped get this ball rolling. Thanks Jerry!!)

Yogurt Tycoon Tackles GMOs

Stonyfield’s Gary Hirshberg has a new mission: Get the government to label genetically modified foods.

By Barry Estabrook

January 17, 2012

CEYO

The healthy food movement just got a CE-Yo.

Gary Hirshberg, the head of Stonyfield Farm, announced that he was turning the operation of the Londonderry, New Hampshire- based organic yogurt company over to Walt Freese, who has held executive positions at Ben & Jerry’s in Burlington, Vermont, and Celestial Seasonings in Boulder, Colorado.

Hirshberg (who called himself CE-Yo at Stonyfield) is staying with the company as chairman, but will give up day-to-day operations to focus on the Just Label It Campaign, a year-old effort to convince the government to require foods containing genetically modified (GMO) ingredients to be labeled.

Aloha Market Friend!

Happy Year of the Dragon!

We welcome our elected State officials back into session this week! Throughout the session you will hear from us as we need your voices to reach out to your senators and congresspersons to do right by our small food farmers. We can all say we are in favor of “Local Food for Local Consumption,” but allowing our voices to be heard can really aid in the process. Which bills will you be following this session? Our eyes are on  passing HB 216/Food Labeling Bill and HB1786/Good Ag Practices. Looks like the Food Safety Bill that was successfully shut down last session is back as HB1832, and we will be defending the farmers against this one once again. We will let you know when your calls and emails are needed. In the meantime, keep advocating for small food farmers through your loyalty of shopping at farmers markets!

We will see you this weekend at Ala Moana Farmers’ Market (Saturday 8-12), Hawaii Kai Farmers’ Market (Saturday 9-1) and Haleiwa Farmers’ Market (Sunday 9-1)!

Vatican Condemns Monsanto Modified Crops as “New Form of Slavery”

Anthony Gucciardi
NaturalSociety

In an interview with the magazine L’Osservatore Romano on January 5, a prominent member of the Vatican spoke out against genetically modified crops. Cardinal Peter Turkson said that genetically modified crops are a “new form of slavery,” and went on to discuss the impact that they have on both the environment and the economy. Regardless of religious association, anyone speaking out against genetically modified should be listened to. As a prominent leader of the Catholic people, Cardinal Turkson has the ability to inform millions worldwide regarding the negative effects of genetically modified food.

Even farmers have risen up against Monsanto and genetically modified seeds, with Monsanto forcing thousands of farmers into debt worldwide. In India, Monsanto has ruined the lives of so many farmers that the prevalence of their suicide has led to a large farming area to be titled the ‘suicide belt of India’. Some have even blamed Monsanto for the recent bird and fish deaths, claiming that the poison coming from their factories may have poisoned animals worldwide. Monsanto’s destruction isn’t limited to the environment, however.

Corn subsidies make unhealthy food choices the rational ones

by Donald Carr, via Grist.org

A big reason that food products derived from corn are so pervasive in America’s diet today is that for decades taxpayers have given corn growers incentives to grow as much as possible through the skewed federal farm subsidy system. The $73.8 billion lavished on corn since 1995 has helped to churn out a host of cheap and unhealthy foods — from chips to sugary sodas to high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

Hold on: Make that “corn sugar.” With consumers souring on HFCS, the Corn Refiners Association has embarked on a re-branding effort, as Tom Laskawy mocked, to prop up the lagging sales of the calorie-laden sweetener that’s found in nearly all cheap processed foods.

Many of the factors that contribute to the nation’s broken food and farm system, like perverse subsidies for commodity grain growers, were exposed in a September 5 Denver Post article. In “Spoiled system: Eating healthier comes with a price for families,” reporter Karen Auge explored the factors that make fresh fruits and vegetables costlier than highly subsidized and less healthy foods based on corn and soy.

You may have noticed all the citrus coming to the market these last weeks. We are smack dab in the middle of Citrus Season, and that means the sweetest, juiciest oranges are perfectly ripe and ready for my juicer! And the lemons, tangerines and limes are finding their way into salad dressings, marinades and desserts! When you select your citrus, turn off the voice in your head telling you to find the prettiest fruit and search for the mottled ugly ones… they are packed with flavor!  Such a taste treat! The glass below is from TWO oranges!

 food democracy now

On December 4, 2011, farmers and activists from across the country joined the Occupy Wall Street Farmers March for “a celebration of community power to regain control over the most basic element to human well-being: food.”

The Farmers March began at La Plaza Cultural Community Gardens where urban and rural farmers addressed an excited crowd about the growing problems in our industrial food system and the promise offered by solutions based in organic, sustainable and community based food and agricultural production. This was followed by a 3-mile march from the East Village to Zuccotti Park, the birthplace of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Home Sweet Home: The New American Localism

You can talk about the global village, a mobile society and the World Wide Web all you want, but many in our country seem to be turning toward a New American Localism.

These days, we are local folks and our focus is local. We are doing everything locally: food, finance, news, charity. And maybe for good reasons.

“One bedrock thing that is going on,” says Brad Edmondson, founder of ePodunk and former editor of American Demographics magazine, is that “because of aging and the recession, people aren’t moving around as much.”

EXCLUSIVE: Under Industry Pressure, USDA Works to Speed Approval of Monsanto’s Genetically Engineered Crops

Monday 12 December 2011
by: Mike Ludwig, Truthout | Report

For years, biotech agriculture opponents have accused regulators of working too closely with big biotech firms when deregulating genetically engineered (GE) crops. Now, their worst fears could be coming true: under a new two-year pilot program at the USDA, regulators are training the world’s biggest biotech firms, including Monsanto, BASF and Syngenta, to conduct environmental reviews of their own transgenic seed products as part of the government’s deregulation process.
